Virtual Reality Integrated Physiotherapy/Physical Activities as a Coping Strategy for Wellness Promotion During Covid Times



The COVID-19 outbreak in China has led to worldwide changes in different fields. Covid 19 brought about a great change in the health, psychosocial and economic conditions of individuals across the world. Covid's subsequent physical and mental health difficulties have seriously affected the daily lives of a large section of the population. In such a situation, staying physically and mentally healthy has become an essential part of our very existence. As we know, Covid has greatly affected the most vulnerable old age community. The major problems include a decline in motor ability and physical activity, increased obesity, impaired cognition, rapid decline in body functions, and various psychological disorders. In this era of social isolation and quarantine, healthcare using modern technology is essential. The increases in the older adult population have led to an emergency where novel and effective intervention strategies are necessary to improve physical activity behaviors and health in this population.

VR exercise is a novel and innovative technology, which immerses individuals in a computer-generated, multi-sensory, three-dimensional world wherein they interact with the virtual environment using either a headset or exercise equipment. Virtual reality (VR) integrated exercise is a promising intervention strategy, which has been utilized in healthcare fields like stroke rehabilitation and psychotherapy. The application of VR exercise is to facilitate improved physical outcomes including enhanced motor ability, healthy body activities, healthy functioning of daily activities, improved cognitive abilities, and positive psychological outcomes. VR exercise has also been observed to be an effective intervention strategy for fall prevention in this population. VR integrated technology is currently used in a variety of health field areas, such as psychotherapy and stroke rehabilitation, and is effective in improving balance and overall health and promoting weight loss in older adults.VR has also been implemented within therapeutic programs for phobias related to height and public speaking, in which patients were immersed in an environment where they progressively worked on their fears. The application of VR has been shown to have positive benefits on older adults’ physical and mental health also VR integrated physiotherapy/ physical exercise allows a large group of people to do their activities most effectively in a parallel world without the help of another person and they can stay healthy in their own home during this dangerous time.
